The symphony session brings together the entire orchestra for a month in August
The summer session of 2026 opens the season of the French Youth Orchestra (OFJ) with a three-week summer interlude in the heart of the Saline royale d’Arc-et-Senans, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Guided by 15 coachs from major French orchestras, the musicians tackle an ambitious symphonic program that mixes great orchestral works with contemporary compositions. Maurice Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé and Boléro allow the orchestra to explore the richness of orchestral timbres and the precision of collective performance, while Richard Strauss’s Also Sprach Zarathustra challenges the orchestra with a monumental structure, shaped by extended durations and narrative tension. Inspired by Nietzsche, the work opens with this famous proclamation: “Become who you are”—an invitation to self-realization and self-assertion that resonates particularly strongly with young musicians still finding their way.
The contribution of composer-in-residence Erkki-Sven Tüür, centered on his work Exodus, offers a vivid insight into contemporary composition. Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto, performed by Edgar Moreau, completes the programme by creating a space for dialogue between soloist and orchestra, at the heart of the lyricism and expressive depth of the Romantic repertoire.
Following this residency, the OFJ will extend the project with a tour of the Baltic states from August 27 to September 6, 2026, visiting Estonia—the homeland of our music director Kristiina Poska—as well as Latvia and Lithuania. This will be a major international performance opportunity for these young artists.

WORKSHOPS
In addition to rehearsals and symphonic concerts, musicians have the opportunity to attend various workshops designed to prepare them for their future careers: musicians’ rights, dealing with stage fright, working on posture (learning to manage your body and take care of it to play better and prevent avoidable pain), entrepreneurship, understanding the professional environment, etc.
CHAMBER MUSIC AND CULTURAL OUTREACH
Becoming an orchestral musician in 2026 means being able to pass on your passion for the symphonic repertoire to different audiences of all ages and backgrounds. At the OFJ, musicians are trained in this key skill within the framework of chamber music, which involves leaving the confines of the Saline to meet new audiences !
Numerous concerts will take place in August, in nursing homes, children’s activity centres, multimedia libraries, public spaces and so on, to share the repertoire and talk about it passionately with people who don’t necessarily go to auditoriums. Max Dozolme, a journalist with France Musique (Maxxi Classique) is this year’s instructor for these concerts that combine music and cultural outreach. You can also listen to the OFJ musicians in various venues throughout the region and in Dijon’s Auditorium for chamber music concerts.
